The minister of solid Mineral Resources, Dr Kayode Fayemi has commended the Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko for his zeal and commitment towards the exploration and exploitation of bitumen in the State, even as he assured of the Federal Government’s readiness to support and partner the state in the bid towards its bitumen exploration.
Dr. Fayemi, who gave the assurance on Friday during a courtesy visit on Dr. Mimiko, said he was happy at the determination of the Governor towards the realization of the exploration of the state’s bitumen. “I toured the bitumen belt on Thursday; I was in Agbabu, Loda, Ilubirin and other communities as well.
It was my first time being there and I was shocked at the quality of bitumen from the surface, having not even gone down. The quality is impressive”. While also commending the Mimiko-led administration for its proactive approach in ensuring that the bitumen project is realized in the state, Fayemi assured him of the federal governments cooperation for its actualization, disclosing that the partnering company’s team, “Liquefied Resources” had visited him in Abuja, submitting that “with the new technology on ground, bitumen exploration is realizable.”
While acknowledging that 80% of bitumen being used in the country was imported, Fayemi said the Agbabu bitumen would soon put an end to this. He said findings clearly showed that the State has the largest deposit of bitumen in Nigeria, which he noted when operational, would benefit the host communities and the entire people of the State. Responding, Mimiko, who lauded the roles of Dr Fayemi in revamping the sector since his assumption of office, solicited his support for the realization of the bitumen project.
He also noted that apart from the bitumen project, his government was also working on Ilaje Deep Sea Mining Port in an effort to complement the diversification effort.
